This week, Sony unveiled the PSVR 2 virtual reality headset’s release date and steep pricing.
As a committed helmet-head, I anticipated that Sony would aim for a pricing point roughly equivalent to that of a PS5, therefore the numbers it provided as pre-order prices didn’t particularly surprise me. Since I’ve used the PSVR 2 before, I know it’s a high-quality piece of equipment, and the inclusion of the Sense controllers in the bundle made the pricing seem about right.
However, the fact that the standard PSVR 2 bundle appears to have virtually no titles didn’t sit well with me. At the time this article was written, Sony made no mention of a basic bundle demo disc or download code being packaged with the base bundle, as it was with the first PlayStation VR. For any potential new adopters of the technology, the understandable but frustrating lack of backward compatibility for the original PSVR library can only be considered as a drawback.
With the PSVR 2 being so pricey and having so few titles available at launch, how can Sony hope to draw in new users? When I joined the Eurogamer news team for their newscast this week, that was one of the topics they asked, and I thought it was a nice one.
The only launch games that have been formally announced so far are Cities VR: Enhanced Edition, a modernized port of Quest 2, and Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a PSVR 2 exclusive. What else does the PSVR 2 have going for it right now? Here are 13 of my most desired, confirmed PSVR 2 games. That’s hardly a lineup worth risking close to £600 on if you buy the Horizon bundle. These are of the highest quality and will help you get the most out of the headset for your money.
That’s where this week’s episode of VR Corner comes in, which you can watch on the video player at the top of this page. In it are 47 confirmed PSVR 2 games that are in development for the headset right now, and this should give you an idea of what else is coming to the PSVR 2 at some point in the future (and it’s not just shooter games this time, I promise).
Those 47 games range in quality of course. Some of them are newly announced PSVR 2 exclusives like the Rush of Blood sequel, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, while others look a tad more like generic VR shovelware.
If you also include the 13 high-quality games that I’ve listed in the video embedded a couple of paragraphs above these words, that brings the number of confirmed PSVR 2 titles so far to around 60. That is a pretty decent number if you ask me, especially as I’m hoping that number to get boosted as we get closer to the launch by developers of PSVR 1 games announcing PSVR 2 updates for their titles.
So, while the future for PSVR 2 might not be looking as bright as it could at the moment in terms of launch titles to play, there is hope for a bustling library in the future. And hey, at least it’ll give you time to save up some cash if you decide to wait until there are some actual games to play on it!
