After bringing a number of its PlayStation-exclusive games on the PC platform throughout 2022, Sony is continuing to grow its PC presence and has a number of further games scheduled for 2023. One of them is the recently announced PC port of Returnal, the outstanding third-person shooter roguelike from Housemarque. Thanks to the game’s new Steam page, more information on the port has come to light.
For starters, the page confirms that Returnal’s PC port is being developed by Climax Studios. The UK-based development team is best known for developing Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and also developed all three games in the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles trilogy. Climax Studios has also provided development support for past Housemarque titles, including Dead Nation and Resogun. The studio also developed the PC port of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
Of course, Sony did acquire a PC port specialist team in Nixxes Software in 2021, and though it worked on the PC ports of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, other PlayStation titles on the platform have looked to external help from other teams, such as God of War with Valkyrie Entertainment and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection with Iron Galaxy Studios.
Meanwhile, Returnal’s Steam page also confirms that the game won’t feature cross-play with PS5. Return is, of course, a primarily single-player game, though it does feature some asynchronous multiplayer elements in its base experience, while co-op is also available as an option. PC and PS5 players will not be able to play with each other, however.
The game’s system requirements have also been detailed- read more on that here.
Returnal is currently available exclusively on PS5 but is set to launch for PC sometime in early 2023. Read our review of the game here.
